About The Major

The human resource management degree is designed to provide you with the skills and competencies necessary for managing in the 21st Century. You will develop the skills you'll need for the effective acquisition, training, appraisal, rewarding and fair treatment of employees – whether you plan on pursuing a career with a Fortune 500 company or a small business. And because of the nature of your business degree, you’ll also be prepared for any number of positions within the world of business.

Business Club – provides opportunities for students to gain a valuable understanding of the business world. Club activities include bringing in speakers to address the issues of graduate school opportunities, career concerns, etiquette forums that focus on acceptable forms of behavior for the workplace and providing opportunities for valuable experience.

Circle K International (CKI) – a collegiate service organization with a worldwide membership that promotes fellowship, leadership and service.

Delta Mu Delta – a national honor society in business.

Hospitality Club – provides awareness to educate you on the unprecedented growth rate of the hospitality industry, the diverse career opportunities available and the current industry events impacting the global economy. Members attend regional and national hospitality conventions, trade shows and expositions.

Student Government – TU’s Student Government is primarily involved in organizing the campus programming, social activities and serving as the voice and advocate for students concerning campus matters.

Also available to TU students are other clubs, organizations and special interests that include: American Marketing Association (AMA), Criminal Justice Club, The Tystenac (TU’s School Newspaper) and Greek Organizations.

On Campus - Offered in a 15-week semester format with a start date of January and August

Online - Offered in two terms per semester starting in January, March, May, July, August and October

Employment and Labor Law (LAW321) - This course is an overview of various laws and regulations that determine the rights and obligations of employees and employers. Topics covered include the nature of the employment relationship and common law principles, prohibitions against discrimination on the basis of certain protected characteristics such as race and gender, wage and hour law, the Family Medical Leave Act, the National Labor Relations Act and other similar areas of labor and employment law. The primary focus is on federal laws governing the employment relationship, but there will also be discussion of state and local laws.     

Human Resource Management (MGT317) - A study of the human resource function in business. Major areas of study will include staffing, recruitment, training and development, wage and salary administration, job analysis and evaluation and labor relations.

Total Compensation Management (MGT318) - A study of the total compensation management function in business, as evidenced through the human resource framework. Major areas of activity will include job analysis, job evaluation, establishing pay structures and benefits.    

Human Resource Risk Management (MGT320) - This course will examine the scope and role of HR in the occupational health and safety arena, the fundamental components of comprehensive programs and, more importantly, the interplay between these considerations and how important HR professionals are in their success. Topics covered include OSHA requirements, risk management and loss prevention, management of safety & workers’ compensation, employee assistance plans, preventative health issues, emergency response & preparedness and developing a culture of safety, amongst others. There will be focus on the fundamental components of a comprehensive health and safety program to protect the employees in an organization and avoid costly liability.   

Managing Diversity in the Workplace (MGT351) - In the context of the growth of multinational enterprises and the increasing diversity of the American workforce, this course deals with gender, racial, age, cultural and other differences in the workplace. The course will focus on being open, sensitive, and fair in dealing with differences and on using diversity as positive force within organizations. This is a writing intensive course.

Rebecca Abraham

Instructor Rebecca (Becky) Abraham began with Tiffin University in 2012 as an adjunct on main campus as well at our extended learning sites. In 2018, she became full-time management faculty. Prior to academia, Becky accrued a background in the Human Resources and Management fields working for over ten years for a family business in Sandusky, OH.

Instructor Abraham earned her undergrad and graduate degrees from Tiffin University and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation with St. Thomas University.

She is active in her community and children’s schools. In her free time she enjoys spending time up at the lake with her family relaxing.

Becky resides in Avon, Ohio with her husband and three children.

Kristina Collins, Ph.D.

Professor Collins holds dual roles as School of Business Director and also as Assistant Professor of Management at Tiffin University, with teaching concentrations in Supply Chain Management and Human Resource Management. Her previous 17 years of university teaching were primarily in Indiana. She has also coordinated and led International Study trips for both undergraduate and graduate students to Russia, Europe, China, and Central America.

Her experience as an Administrative Director at the university level has focused in the areas of Organizational Development & Training, Curriculum Development, and Academic Outcomes Assessment. She is currently completing her PhD in Business Administration with her doctoral research focusing on economic development and global leadership.

Professor Collins serves as President-elect of ACBSP’s (Accreditation Council of Business Schools & Programs) Great Lakes Council Region 4, as well as an ACBSP Peer Evaluator, since 2013.  To contribute to the body of research for quality and continuous improvement in higher education, she has presented at several ACBSP conferences, most recently in Athens, Greece and Philadelphia, PA.

As a consultant and practitioner, she also has earned a Six Sigma Green Belt which is utilized in working with organizations to develop and implement continuous improvement programs. Professional certifications include Achieve Global and Covey programs. Her professional awards include the Presidential Award for Outstanding Evening Division Faculty of the Year (2002) as well as the Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow Award as the SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) faculty advisor (2006-2008).

Sharon Perry-Fantini, Ph.D.

Professor Perry-Fantini earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Management from Capella University. She also holds a Masters of Business Administration Degree from Tiffin University and a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Human Resource Management and Organizational Management. The British Standards Institution granted her certification as a Quality Lead Auditor for ISO 9000 in 2001. In 2000, she completed certification in Professional Human Resource Management from the University of Toledo and the Society of Human Resource Management.

She teaches courses in human resources, organizational behavior, and organizational communications. Additionally, she teaches labor relations at the community college level. Before joining the ranks of a full-time faculty member, she served as the Executive Director of Degree Completion Admissions. During her tenure, the number of students enrolled in the bachelor’s degree completion programs in business administration and criminal justice increased by 49% in two years. Additionally, geographic expansion and online delivery increased. She served several organizations in positions such as, human resources, trainer, benefits coordinator, lead auditor, radio script writer, and voice talent.

She is a member of the Terra State Community College Advisory Board. Previously, she was an executive board member of the Lorain County Urban League and a member of the Ohio Transfer Council. She has also served on Tiffin University’s Strategic Planning Committee, Portal Committee, Website Redesign Committee, and Information Technology Committee.

Her research interests include social development centered on the concept of identity by Erik Erikson, structural diversity, organizational transformation, classroom diversity, democracy outcomes, and adult learning theory. Her mission which fully fosters reflective thinking allows learners the opportunity to think about complex challenges or issues from different perspectives.
