Student Success & First-Year Experience

Welcome Weekend "Take Flight" - Save the Date - August 23-25, 2019 - Homecoming & Family Day - September 28, 2019

The Office of Student Success and First-Year Experience (FYE) assists incoming students with their transition to Tiffin University through programs, services, and resources designed to prepare and support them socially, personally and academically. Our goal is to coordinate first-year programming that significantly improves the college experience, enhances student satisfaction, and encourages engagement early in the collegiate career.

First-Year Interaction and Registration Experience (F.I.R.E.)
F.I.R.E. is a one-day orientation session for students and their families to begin the transition to Tiffin University. Students will meet with a financial aid advisor, register for classes, meet other incoming students and upper-class leaders, and learn about career development opportunities and other student support services available at TU.

Welcome Weekend
Welcome Weekend is a three-day event full of exciting activities for new students to help kick-off their college experience. It serves as an introduction to virtually everything TU has to offer. Welcome Weekend provides all new students a chance to make connections with faculty, staff and other students while being led by upper-class peer mentors.

Campus Convocation
Tiffin University embodies a student-centered, friendly, engaging campus culture. Convocation is a ceremony recognizing the significance of the beginning of the new academic journey with our new Dragon Family. Students are to engage in the learning opportunities that lay before them.

First-Year Advising
All first-year students are assigned a First-Year Advisor (FYA) who provides focused attention on the success of students by providing quality and personalized academic planning and mentoring throughout their first year. The FYA serves as a main point of contact for all questions, concerns, and connections while promoting student motivation and holistic campus engagement. All first-year students meet with their FYA during their first year on campus to explore their academic and personal goals.

Dragon Education Core
DEC 100 Engage is the first of a required four-course sequence in the general education curriculum. The purpose of this course is to help each new student successfully transition to Tiffin University by building social connections, encouraging professionalism, and improving academic preparedness. DEC 100 aims to foster a sense of belonging, promote engagement in the life of the University, encourage individual responsibility, and articulate to students the expectations and values of the University. The course also assists students with exploring and investigating career opportunities.

Peer Mentor Program
The Peer Mentor is an upper-class student who works with an instructor to co-facilitate the DEC 100 Engage course each semester. A peer mentor is an upper-class role model whose goal is to ease the transition to college and serve as a helpful resource to all things Tiffin University.

First-Year Common Read
Each year, first-year students are required to read a book as part of their first semester. This year’s book explores the personal beliefs and guiding principles by which people live today. No matter your age or circumstances, this book will give valuable insight on how others have learned from life's challenges.

Dragon Family Club
Dragon Family Club provides family and loved ones access to the bi-monthly e-newsletter complete with key dates and events going on throughout the semester, as well as helpful resources to assist family members of college students through the university acclimation process. Family and friends are invited to experience a day in the life of their student at our annual Homecoming and Family Day each fall.
